Where aluminum makes sense
- Pools. Many aluminum styles are designed with pool enclosures in mind. Your town's building office can confirm the exact height, spacing, and gate-latch rules.
- Front yards. A black picket-style aluminum fence reads as traditional ironwork from the sidewalk.
- Views. Open pickets keep sightlines to the water, a garden, or the street.
- Slopes. Many panels can be racked to follow a grade instead of stepping down.
What it won't do
Aluminum doesn't offer privacy on its own. If screening is the goal, look at privacy styles in wood or vinyl, or plan for plantings behind the fence.
Aluminum and salt air
Aluminum forms a thin oxide layer instead of rusting through, but salt can still pit bare metal over time. The powder-coated finish does most of the protecting, which is why scratches and chips deserve a touch-up. Fasteners matter too: mixing metals can speed corrosion where they meet. Our coastal fencing guide covers this in more depth.
Questions to ask contractors
- Residential or heavier commercial grade?
- What does the finish warranty say about coastal locations?
- What screws, hinges, and latches come with it?
- Will panels be racked or stepped on my slope?
