Vinyl privacy fences skip the painting and cope well with salt air and humidity, with style and color options depending on the product line. Neither is automatically better; it comes down to looks, upkeep, and budget.
Wind is worth thinking about. Tall solid fences catch wind, and open or coastal lots can see strong storm gusts. How posts are sized and set matters as much as the material — something a contractor should address for your site.
